Studio Brief 05 Visual Research OUGD403

Before starting the idea generation stage of studio brief 05 I thought it might be productive to do some visual research into posters generally to do with conservation of energy and the environment.

Although these posters are not directly related to the conservation of energy they caught my eye because of their use of limited colour schemes. The way the images are simplified into block colours, conveying themselves in a concise and effective way. This is something that could be incorporated into the final designs for this project. It is likely  that the final designs will be vector images because of this limitation in colour, so the application of block colours in a similar manor to that shown above could be very effective.

The majority of the designs that communicate energy conservation are very literal and contain the physical movement of what the poster is asking you to do. This seems a bit patronising and is something that should be avoided in this project. This could be achieved by using slightly more obscure imagery so that the audience has to work slightly more to decipher meaning hopefully engaging the audience more and communicating a more lasting message.

Out of all the conservation posters found this was the most effective and attention grabbing. The simplicity of the design means the impact is much higher and the clever use of an image to make a letter form makes the design, and therefore the message, much more memorable. These are ideas that should be incorporated into the design development for this project by creating a simple design possibly with a quirky clever aspect that maintains the audiences attention and makes them remember what they have seen.

Whenever something is associated with energy conservation the colour green is pretty much consistently used. this is something that should be avoided because everyone starts to ignore this colour as it is synonymous with the preachy tone of conservation posters.
